Note from pastor:
In the UMC Denomination, there is harmful and hurtful language in our “Book of Discipline” (the rules by which we order ourselves) that in some cases we work hard to find workarounds. Technically, we don’t ordain gay and lesbian persons, but practically there are a number of LGBTQ+ UMC clergy. Also, in our denomination individual churches don’t ordain but instead rely on a regional body. If it’s simpler, I’m happy to say that we absolutely recommend LGBTQ+ persons for ordination (and even have a member of our congregation working toward ordination who identifies as LGBTQ+).
This complexity is similar to LGBTQ+ weddings. Technically, we’re not allowed. And if we do, we can be “defrocked” (removed from clergy status). Even so, many of us face these consequences and choose to perform these weddings as a matter of justice. Pacific Beach UMC is one such place.
