"Men and Women in the Church" (Sermon by Brent Van Elswyk, 2016) Listen from 27:00 to 34:00.
Excerpt: "When Paul says I do not permit a woman to teach, what kind of teaching is he talking about?...We have examples of women teaching women, women teaching children, women teaming up with their husbands to teach privately. So what kind of teaching is it? ...Namely, authoritative teaching. Teaching and authority....Paul is restricting this authoritative type of teaching to men....To exercise authority means to rule, to govern, and to lead....It is pastors or elders or overseers who have two primary roles: teaching and leading....If we put all of these things together, it seems what he is most naturally saying is this: I do not permit a woman to fill the office of pastor within the church. That does not include other positions on the staff, we have many women on our staff at the church here now. It is talking about the position of Elder or Pastor."
"Women and Men in Ministry" (Sermon by Matt Voorhes, 2016) Listen starting at 40:00.
Excerpt: "For the elder position, the role of authoritative teaching and governance in the church is intended for men, and so wives aren't permitted, per 1 Timothy chapter 2, to participate, to share in that leadership function."
