The vision for Church Clarity was born over a year ago. It’s gained momentum in the past few months as we have rapidly assembled a leadership team, advisory council, and advocates who share our vision, passion and belief that churches need to be clear about policies that impact LGBTQ+ individuals.
Our goal is to eliminate the prevailing evangelical reality where ambiguity is acceptable, where accountability is non-existent and where pastors are able to conceal the policies they actively enforce. We believe that clarity should start on what many churches describe as their “front door”—their websites.
While many churches say, “all are welcome” or “come as you are,” many, in fact, enforce policies that restrict LGBTQ+ people from meaningfully engaging in their communities. Some churches take the stance that being ambiguous or “having no policy” is the most loving thing to do, when in fact it often causes more harm than good.
Our team has developed a system that scores churches based on information that’s publicly accessible on their websites. We publish what we find by sharing links to churches’ websites as well as any other supporting information that helps shape churches’ LGBTQ+ policies. In the future, we hope to broaden our focus to include other policies and issues.
For our launch, we have scored 25 churches, and we plan to regularly release new batches of scores as we continue to build the Church Clarity database.
We are not advocating for churches to change their stance on any issues, but to rather be clear and forthright about policies that matter.
Here’s what you can do next:
Proverbs 28:19 says, “where there is no vision people perish.” It’s our hope that where’s there’s CLARITY, people will FLOURISH.
That’s why we are doing this.
Welcome to Church Clarity.
