Welcome to Church Clarity

The vision for Church Clarity was born over a year ago. It’s gained momentum in the past few months as we have rapidly assembled a leadership team, advisory council, and advocates who share our vision, passion and belief that churches need to be clear about policies that impact LGBTQ+ individuals.

Our goal is to eliminate the prevailing evangelical reality where ambiguity is acceptable, where accountability is non-existent and where pastors are able to conceal the policies they actively enforce. We believe that clarity should start on what many churches describe as their “front door”—their websites.

While many churches say, “all are welcome” or “come as you are,” many, in fact, enforce policies that restrict LGBTQ+ people from meaningfully engaging in their communities. Some churches take the stance that being ambiguous or “having no policy” is the most loving thing to do, when in fact it often causes more harm than good.

Our team has developed a system that scores churches based on information that’s publicly accessible on their websites. We publish what we find by sharing links to churches’ websites as well as any other supporting information that helps shape churches’ LGBTQ+ policies. In the future, we hope to broaden our focus to include other policies and issues.

For our launch, we have scored 25 churches, and we plan to regularly release new batches of scores as we continue to build the Church Clarity database.

We are not advocating for churches to change their stance on any issues, but to rather be clear and forthright about policies that matter.

Here’s what you can do next:

  • Explore our Scores Database and take action. Any church that we’ve listed as Unclear or Undisclosed has an option for you to Tweet or email the church to request clarity.
  • Become an Advocate. If you, like us, believe clarity should be the standard for churches, then consider becoming an advocate and join our growing list of advocates!
  • Help us score churches. It’s going to be nigh impossible for our small team to score hundreds of thousands of churches. For this standard of clarity to have wide-scale impact, it will require the collective action of our crowdsourcers. We’ve created a crowdsource form that allows anyone to help us score churches. Our team will work to verify every submission and share your findings in a timely manner.
  • Spread the word and follow us on social media. We’ve created graphics you can share on social media. We’ll be actively engaging on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.
  • Pray. We believe God can do significant things through our efforts, and we covet your prayers as we embark on this journey!

Proverbs 28:19 says, “where there is no vision people perish.” It’s our hope that where’s there’s CLARITY, people will FLOURISH.

That’s why we are doing this.

Welcome to Church Clarity.
