sermon "Friendship and Dating" recorded on June 3, 2019 by Pastor Ian McFadden.
21 minutes: "For New Testament scholar Wesley Hill and others like Vaughn Roberts, this is precisely the quandry they arrived in. Both of these men found themselves to be primarily sexually and romantically attracted to other men. Perhaps this is your experience...And others of you may have grown up outside the church or in churches that affirm homosexuality, and now in your journey of following Jesus and of reading the scriptures for yourself, and you have found that you just don't know how to square up gay marriage and the teaching of the Bible...If you've been hurt by unloving words and actions from the church because you're gay that I'm sorry we in the church have often acting more out of fear than out of the love of Jesus have said and done things that were cruel and hurtful...Furthermore if you identify as gay you're very welcome at St. Mo's. My intent is to unpack scripture in a loving and faithful way. The faithful bit means that at St. Mo's we reserve the right for the scripture to say things that challenge us. Even the most challenging pieces [of scripture] I should be communicating with deep tenderness."
23 mins "And this is where Wes Hill and Vaughn Roberts and other gay people I admire arrive at the tension between this inner pull to have romantic and sexual union with someone of the same sex, and outward cultural push towards marriage and doing the thing that came advertized as making them happy, and, on the other hand, an abiding trust in Jesus, growing deeper in following him, and experiencing faithfulness and his love, and the choice they made, the brave choice that I believe is faithful to God and to scripture which is embracing a life of celibate singleness out of devotion to Jesus...we've lost sight of deep, committed, Christian friendships."
